Almost every sportsbook app in the United States rents its right to exist. A casino floor or a professional franchise holds the permission, the app trades underneath it, and when that relationship ends the app leaves the state. Missouri wrote two exceptions into its constitution and DraftKings holds one of them. It is a structural detail that never appears in an advert and it is the most useful thing to know about this operator here.
Tethered and untethered, and why the difference is not cosmetic
Amendment 2, approved by voters on 5 November 2024, let each of the state's thirteen casinos and each professional sports franchise bring a mobile brand to market under its own permission. Those brands are tethered: the host holds the permission, the app is a skin on it, and the commercial arrangement between them has a term and a renewal date. The amendment also created two standalone mobile permissions that belong to the operator itself. DraftKings and FanDuel took those two.
Over one season nobody notices. Over five, the difference is security of tenure. Tethered apps have disappeared from other markets mid-contract when a host was sold, when a partnership lapsed, or when a casino decided its own brand was worth more than the rent. A standalone permission cannot be withdrawn that way. If you dislike moving an account, funding it again and rebuilding a betting history somewhere new, that is worth something.
What the licence class does not give you
| Standalone mobile brand | Casino-tethered brand | |
| Stays if a partnership ends | Yes | Not necessarily |
| Cash deposit at a cage | No, there is no cage | Often, at the host property |
| In-person dispute desk | No | Yes, at the host's counter |
| Same-day cash collection | No | Sometimes, at the host's cage |
| Property rewards tie-in | No | Usually, to the host's loyalty scheme |
The trade is real and it runs both ways. A bettor who wants to hand over notes at a window and walk out with a ticket, or who wants a supervisor to look at a contested settlement in person, is better served by a brand attached to one of the thirteen properties. A standalone app has a support queue and nothing else. Our retail guide sets out where the windows are.
Making sure you have the real app
The most common way to lose money to a sportsbook in a newly opened market is not a bad bet, it is downloading something that is not the sportsbook. Newly legal states attract lookalike listings, sponsored search results and social advertising that copies the branding closely. Install from the operator's own site or from the official store listing, check the publisher name rather than the icon, and treat any app that asks for a deposit before it asks for identity verification as fake. We checked the store listings and the published permission holders in September 2026.
What registration will and will not accept
Identity is verified against the name on the funding instrument, so a card or a bank account belonging to a partner or a parent fails the check rather than simply declining. The minimum age is 21, and that is the floor everywhere in this state, mobile or in person. Expect a $5 minimum on most deposit methods, a withdrawal minimum nearer $10, and credit cards refused outright, which is policy at the large operators rather than a limit on your card. A first withdrawal triggers a document check and takes longer than every subsequent one.
The promotional cycle, and when you are actually being paid
A new market is subsidised. Operators spend heavily to buy accounts in the opening quarters and then stop, and the offers available in the first half of 2026 were considerably richer than the ones on the same screens by autumn. If you are opening an account now, judge it on the ordinary product rather than the welcome credit: the list of markets it prices, how it handles a void leg, and whether a bonus credit is withdrawable or play-through only. Those three answers matter every week; a sign-up offer matters once.
Should this be your first account
We rate it a reasonable first account in this state and a poor only account. The licence class is a genuine argument for opening it, because it is the one thing about an operator you cannot change later and cannot see from the outside. But a single account means a single price on every game you bet, and comparing two prices is worth more across a season than any promotion pays. Open this one, then open a second from the published holders list and use whichever is offering the better number. Our Missouri sportsbooks guide compares the field, and the FanDuel review covers the other standalone brand.
Frequently asked questions
When did DraftKings start taking Missouri wagers?
On 1 December 2025, the first day wagering was permitted in the state.
What is an untethered mobile licence?
A permission that belongs to the operator rather than to a host casino or sports team. Missouri created two under Amendment 2.
Can I deposit cash into a DraftKings account in Missouri?
No. There is no casino cage behind a standalone brand. Cash deposits are a feature of apps tethered to one of the thirteen properties.
What is the minimum age?
21, for every mobile account and every betting window in the state.
How do I know the app I downloaded is genuine?
Install from the operator's own site or the official store listing, check the publisher name, and be suspicious of any app asking for a deposit before identity verification.
